Count of Cyclospora Cases Nears 400
At least 397 cases of cyclospora occurred in 16 U.S. states between mid-June and early July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.
This number marks a 19-case jump from the 378 illnesses reported by the agency Wednesday. While the 143 cases in Iowa and the 78 in neighboring Nebraska have been identified as part of the same outbreak, other states are working to figure out whether the infections reported to their health departments during that time period are also part of the outbreak.
Health officials from Iowa and Nebraska have reported that a bagged salad mix was the likely source of the parasite that sickened victims in their states.
Cyclospora illnesses by state (and New York City, counted separately) are as follows: Iowa (143), Texas (101), Nebraska (78), Florida (25), Wisconsin (9), Illinois (4), New York City (5), Georgia (3), Kansas (2), Louisiana (2), Missouri (2), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (1), Minnesota (1), New Jersey (1), New York (1), and Ohio (1).
"Additional cases are currently under investigation and will be included on this page as states confirm them," CDC says on its outbreak page.
